MODEL 1840 FLINTLOCK SMOOTHBORE CONVERTED TO PERCUSSION DATED 1842

$1,995.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 998-58

The 1840 was the last standard production US flintlock musket. Many of them were converted to percussion and this is one of them.

The barrel surface is bright with light scattered mottling throughout with very light pitting around the breech. There is no rear sight and the front sight is a brass blade mounted on the forward most barrel band. There is a bayonet lug mounted under the muzzle. Breech is marked with “VP” and eaglehead while the barrel tang bears a faint “1841” date. The barrel was converted to percussion by drilling a nipple into the top of the barrel and fitting a new hammer. Bore is bright but has scattered dirt and some pitting.

Lock is bright with some small amounts of dark oxidation to match the barrel and hammer. Lock has a rounded beveled front and a pointed rear. Remains of the brass pan is present forward of the hammer. Also forward of the hammer is a good spread-winged eagle over a strong small “US.” Behind the hammer is “SPRINGFIELD 1842.” Action is excellent.

Walnut stock is dark and untouched. One faint cartouche mark remains visible near the narrow escutcheon. Comb area on right side is carved with “WR” while the left side of the forearm has a carved “JR.” Both carvings are old and look to be of the period.

Buttplate has a good “US” on tang and matches the rest of the iron on the weapon in color and appearance. All three barrel bands are present as are the band springs and sling swivels. Bands show some light pitting.

Full length, flat faced, trumpet style ramrod is present.  [ad]
