Original Model 1861 .58 caliber rifle-musket in nice condition overall. This musket was a product of James D. Mowry of Norwich, Connecticut.

Barrel is semi-bright with scattered light mottling throughout with several small spots of oxidation. Correct front and rear sights are present. Left flat of the barrel at the breech has crisp inspector’s marks of “VP” with eaglehead. Barrel date of “1864” is also very strong. Bolster retains the original nipple Bore is clean with excellent rifling.

Musket retains its original lockplate with a good stamping of a spreadwinged eagle forward of the hammer. Details at center of the eagle are worn but visible. Forward of the eagle is a small “US” over a good strong stamping of “JAS D. MOWRY” over “NORWICH, CONN.” Behind the hammer is an equally strong date of “1864.” Bolster screw and hammer screw are good. Action is strong and works properly.

Black walnut stock is in good condition and exhibits the usual small dings and scratches consistent with age. There is no visible cartouche. Stock appears to be untouched. Lines are still sharp.

The musket’s original tulip-head steel ramrod with swell retains its threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present and all three barrel bands are stamped with a “U.” Iron buttplate has strong “US” stamped on tang.

This is a nice original Civil War longarm made by a contractor not often seen. [ad]
