RE-BLUED MODEL 1884 SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR RIFLE

$550.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 410-176

It should first be noted that ALL the iron surfaces of this rifle have been re-blued.

Weapon has a 32 5/8 inch long barrel. When the barrel was re-blued the left side of the raised firing pin housing was missed as were two small areas near the front barrel band. Barrel has the correct blade front sight while at rear is the Buffington sight that can be adjusted for elevation and windage. Top of sight is marked with a letter “R” for rifle. Sight is complete. Elevation screw operates well but the windage screw is frozen. No viewing or proof marks are visible at breech. Bore looks very clean but it is dark. Rifling is good. Barrel is attached to the rifle stock by two barrel bands. Bands are both stamped with a horizontal “U.” Front band is backwards.

Lock retains the spread-winged eagle forward of the hammer and “U. S.” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Stampings are subdued but visible. Action works properly. Breech has been blued on the exterior. Interior has the hint of some case colors. Serial number on the breech is 532441. Top of breech at hinge is clearly marked “U.S. MODEL 1884.”

Wood stock was refinished. No cartouche marks are visible. There are no cracks or chips in the wood. Right side of the butt is stamped in three lines “”G” “2” “53.” Butt plate shows some light pitting near tang. Plate has a good “US” stamping.

An original leather sling is attached.

Ramrod bayonet operates properly.  [ad]
