$1,695.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 998-23

This M. T. Wickham-contract musket was originally a .69 caliber flintlock later converted to a percussion rifled-musket by private contractor Hewes & Phillips of Newark, NJ.

The weapon has a 42.00 inch long rifled barrel that is bright with moderate mottling scattered over its surface. Rear sight is a double flip-up leaf with a pointed iron sight mounted on the front of the front of the double band behind the muzzle. Bayonet lug is present at top of the muzzle. Breech has H & P conversion with bolster and original nipple. Markings are not visible at top of breech while the left side is stamped with “N.J.” Bore has good rifling but needs cleaned.

Original lockplate is bright and features a round beveled front with a point at the back. It also has a high-spur, C-shaped hammer. Plate is stamped “PHILA / 1830” behind the hammer and has the “U S” over “M. T. WICKHAM” in an arc in front. All stampings are strong. Mechanics are tight and crisp.

Stock is black walnut and in good overall condition with no cracks and looks to be untouched. There is one good cartouche visible on the stock flat. All three barrel bands are present and match the rest of the iron surfaces. The bands and escutcheon opposite the lock show some light pitting. There is no ramrod but both of the sling swivels are present.  [ad]
