The weapon has a barrel that is plumb brown over most of its length. Scattered over the surface is light to moderate pin-prick pitting. Top of the breech has been cleaned. Front and rear sight are present and correct. Rear sight has both flip-up leaves. Breech area has a very strong “VP” and eaglehead. Top of breech has a strong barrel date of “1863.” Bore is clean with good rifling. Nipple is original and shows some dirt and pitting around its base. Bolster has a strong spread-winged eagle mark.
Lockplate is semi-bright in appearance. It has a strong spread-winged eagle and “U.S. SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer and a crisp 1863 behind it. Hammer matches barrel and lock and works well. Action is strong and works properly.
All three barrel bands are present and stamped with a horizontal “U.” Bands have some original color.
The Whitneyville type stock has been lightly gone over and has the usual dings and dents from age and use. Left flat has two faint but complete inspector’s cartouches. Stock does not exhibit any cracks.
Buttplate matches the rest of the iron on the rifle but lacks the “US” mark on the tang. Triggerguard matches as well. Both sling swivels are present as is an original leather sling.
Ramrod is correct tulip head with straight shank and is complete with threads on tip.
Solid representative of a Civil War infantry weapon. [ad]
