Barrel surface has turned a plumb brown over the majority of its surface and is in nice overall condition. Breech area shows some brighter spots. Front blade sight is present as is correct flip-up leaf rear sight with sliding appture. Breech and bolster area show moderate pitting. Three English viewer marks are present on the left side of the barrel at breech along with the number “25” stamped twice indicating the bore is .577 caliber. Bore is dark and dirty but does have good rifling.

The lockplate and hammer are dark to match the barrel. Lock is unmarked. There is a small surface chip in the metal behind the hammer. Hammer stops at half-cock but does not hold when trigger is squeezed. Operates properly at full-cock.

Black walnut stock appears to have been lightly gone over. Bottom of the butt is marked “W. TIMMER” and the flat opposite the lock bears a US Ordnance Department stamp. There is a small amount of “burn out” behind the hammer. Wood exhibits less than usual wear. There are no visible cracks. There is one old small chip behind the lock.

Lockplate screw heads show light wear. All three barrel bands are present as well as both sling swivels. Correct ramrod is present but threaded tip is gone and the end has been hammered into a screwdriver blade. Ramrod channel shows some wear.

All brass furniture exhibits a dark patina.  [ad]
