Item Code: 1000-112

A fine specimen of an original M1816 smoothbore musket dated 1832 and produced by the Springfield Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts. Never converted to percussion, this .69 caliber, single shot, 42” long, round barrel muzzleloader remains in very good condition. Gun metal exhibits a smooth surface with a light silver/gray color.

The 6¾” long lockplate shows a three-line marking reading “SPRING / FIELD / 1832” behind the hammer and has the early, small American eagle motif over “US” between the hammer and the detachable brass frizzen pan. Mountings are iron. Barrel secured via three iron bands and three band springs. Middle band has front sling swivel mounted on bottom. Barrel breech marked with proof marks and eagle head that are clearly visible as well as “H C 27”. Breech tang has clear 1832 date. Sub-inspector marks on various components. Iron buttplate tang clearly marked “US”.  Bore is dirty. Steel, button-shaped ramrod is in good original condition and retains its treaded tip. All other iron components are good. Screw heads remain in good shape.  The original cock, frizzen, pan, sideplate and screws are in very good condition.  Mechanically very strong with crisp action.

Black walnut full stock is in good condition. No cracks and only the normal wear and dings expected for its age. Some wear to the finish along the comb. Stock exhibits two deep and clear oval cartouches on the left flat. A third oval cartouche mark underneath the stock at the trigger guard tang.

This unaltered original flintlock musket is a very good Model 1816 specimen and would make a fine addition to any military collection of early American longarms.   [jet]
