US MODEL 1861 SPRINGFIELD DATED 1862 WITH CONFEDERATE MARKING

$3,795.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 218-536

Barrel is semi-bright with light scattered mottling. There is no pitting worth mentioning. Front and rear sights are present. Rear sight has both flip-up leaves and is blued. Breech area has a strong “VP” and eaglehead. Top of breech has a thin barrel date of “1862.” Bore has good rifling with scattered light pitting in spots.

Lockplate matches the barrel with a semi-bright appearance. It has a strong spread-winged eagle with a good “US” over “SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer and a strong 1862 behind it. Hammer matches barrel and lock and works well. Nipple is original and clean. Bolster screw shows faint wear.

Walnut stock has the usual dings and dents from age and use as well as some surface scratches, especially on the flat opposite the lock. Left flat does not exhibit any inspector’s cartouche marks. Wood appears not to have been cleaned or sanded.

Just forward of the triggerguard the wood is stamped with the letter “Q.” New research has discovered that various letter stampings in this area denote weapons captured by the Confederates and repaired at one of their arsenals.

All three barrel bands are present and stamped with a horizontal “U.” Bands match the rest of the iron on the weapon as does the buttplate and triggerguard. Buttplate has a thin “US” on the tang and does not fit perfectly to the stock. This may be a replacement when the rifle was repaired by the Confederates. Both sling swivels are present.

Ramrod is correct tulip head with swelled shank and is complete with threads on tip. Ramrod channel shows very little wear.

A nice example of a wartime Springfield.  [ad]
