Model 1842, .69 caliber musket manufactured at Harpers Ferry. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition. Originally smoothbore, the barrel was later rifled, rear sight added, and ramrod altered. Nice viewer’s proof with eagle head on breech as well as additional set of script inspector’s initials. The breech plug tang features the year “1848”. The original ramrod is present. The smoothbore ramrod was altered by milling out the end to accommodate a Minie ball. The threaded end remains in good shape. The hammer and lock plate are in very nice condition. The US and eagle remain clearly visible. “HARPERS / FERRY / 1851” is stamped clearly behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Butt plate is stamped with small san serif “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, and swivels are present and in good condition. All gun metal is clean with a light gray color. The bore is clean with only small spots of oxidation. Rifling remains strong.

The walnut stock is in very good condition with the usual dings and dents scattered overall. A cartouche is visible on the flat opposite the lock plate. Gunstock is solid with original dark color and finish.

This is a very solid example of an 1842 smoothbore (that was later rifled) from Harpers Ferry Armory.   [jet]
