Item Code: 1000-351

This Pattern 1853 Enfield musket bears a mark that shows it was recovered from a battlefield or captured and sent to a Confederate armory for repair.

The weapon has a barrel that has turned mostly brown. The surface is smooth and exhibits a nice sheen with small scattered spots of oxidation. The front sight is present but the rear sight was removed long ago as the barrel in that area matches the rest of the surface. Left flat has two viewer’s marks and a “25” with the other “25” being poorly stamped. This mark shows that the barrel is .577 caliber. Bore is dark but clean with good rifling.

Lock and hammer are dark to match the rest of the iron on the weapon and it is devoid of any markings whatsoever. Top of bolster has two small vice marks. Original nipple is present with some light surface rust. Action is good and works properly.

Wood stock is dark, especially in the wrist area and butt. Wood surface shows some crazing where the original finish has oxidized some. There is a gouge in the wood behind the hammer. The flat opposite the lock has a closed crack running from the upper lock screw escutcheon forward to the barrel. Ramrod channel shows light wear. Stamped in the wood just forward of the brass triggerguard is a faint letter “Q.” Research has discovered that various letter stampings in this area denote weapons captured by the Confederates and repaired at one of their arsenals.

All brass furniture on the weapon is dark. Both slings swivels are missing. Ramrod is full length with threaded tip.  [AD]
