REMINGTON M1863 “ZOUAVE” RIFLE IN GOOD CONDITION

$1,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3796

The Model 1863 “Zouave” rifle was produced by the firm of Remington in Ilion New York between 1862 and 1865. Weapon is .58 caliber, single shot percussion muzzleloader in good condition. The Remington longarm rated as one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War era even though the rifles were never issued to the troops.

This “US” marked weapon measures 49” long with a 33” round barrel secured to a black walnut stock with two-barrel bands. Bore is excellent. Barrel retains all of its original bluing but does show small amounts of scattered surface pitting near the breech and some oxidation over the rest of the surface. A two-leaf rear sight and a blade pinched front sight that has been slightly altered by a shooter are present. Bayonet lug is attached to the barrel’s right side to accommodate the Remington saber bayonet. Left side of breech shows the proof stamping marks of “U.S.” over VP” with eaglehead just before the barrel tang. Behind the eaglehead is a light “G.P.” Left facet of the barrel shows strong and clear inspector marks of “H. S.L.” and “STEEL.” Top area of breech exhibits the date “1863” on the barrel tang. Tang screw has some wear and just in front of it is a threaded hole for a sight mount of some kind.

The lockplate has light mottling throughout and exhibits a lightly detailed spread-winged eagle forward of the hammer with “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” below and just forward of the eagle. A faint “U.S.” is stamped directly below the eagle. Strong date “1863” behind the hammer. Action is good. Original nipple is present.

All furniture, including butt plate, trigger guard, barrel bands, nose cap, and patchbox, are uncleaned brass.

Walnut stock has some light storage scratches and the usual small dings and dents. Two, visibly faint government cartouche rest on the flat opposite the lock. Right side of the butt has the brass patchbox which opens and closes easily.

Weapon has its original steel ramrod with the tulip head and threaded tip along with both sling swivels. Ramrod surface exhibits some oxidation on tulip end.  [ad]
