MODEL 1863 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET DATED 1864

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 362-808

Barrel surface is turning plumb brown and has some moderate to heavy pitting around the nipple area. The rest of the surface has a few tiny spots of pitting here and there otherwise it is good. The front sight is present at the muzzle and the rear sight has both flip-up leaves. The left flat of the breech bears a faint eaglehead with no “VP” visible. The barrel date is gone as is the eagle on the bolster. Nipple is original and slightly worn. Bore is dark but clean with fair to good rifling.

The lockplate is dark. It has a decent stamping of a spread-winged eagle and a light “US” over “SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer. There is an equally light “1864” behind the hammer. Action is crisp and works properly. Lockplate screws and hammer screw show light wear.

The wood stock has been lightly gone over. The flat opposite the lock does not show any inspector’s cartouches. Wood lines are worn. There is one small closed crack by the upper lock screw. It is less than an inch in length. Ramrod channel shows a few chips. Iron buttplate has a crisp “US” stamping but the plate does not fit well. It overhangs the butt by half an inch. It is also not flush against the stock. No wood appears to be missing in this area.

All three barrel bands are present and are held in place by screws at the bottom of the band. Two of the three have a strong “U” stamping while the third is blank. The front band fits loosely. Band screw heads show wear.  Both sling swivels are present.

The straight shanked tulip head ramrod is a reproduction and is missing the threaded tip.  [ad]
