RARE NIPPES CONVERSION OF A MODEL 1840 MUSKET

$3,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-97

Between 1848 and 1849 two contracts for 1000 weapons each was given to D. S. Nippes of Philadelphia for his Model 1840 muskets with the Maynard tape primer ignition system.

This musket meas. approx. 58.00 inches in overall length with a round .69 barrel that meas. approx. 42.00 inches long. The surface of the barrel is bright with a heavily mottled appearance with some light pitting near the muzzle. The brass blade front sight is mounted on the foremost part of the double front band. There is no rear sight. The bayonet lug is mounted under the muzzle. Breech is strongly stamped with “U.S.” over “J. C. B.” over “P.” The barrel tang bears a strong “1848” date. Bore is dark with much surface dirt.

The lockplate and Maynard tape mechanism matches the barrel surface in color and patina. Lockplate is rounded and beveled at front with a pointed rear that is flush with the stock. A large drum with nipple and clean out screw have been drilled into the old touch-hole. Mounted onto the face of the lock forward of the hammer is a Maynard tape mechanism that has a rather large oblong door similar to those seen on later mechanism. This door swings downward allowing for the loading of the Maynard tape. The interior mechanism works properly when the hammer is cocked. Door is clearly marked at bottom with “EDWARD MAYNARD PATANTEE 1845” in three lines. Hammer is an odd looking affair being very tall in order to reach the nipple around the mechanism. It also has a rather tall hammer spur with a crosshatched face. Hammer and mechanism operate perfectly. Lock has a strong stamp behind the hammer of “MILL CREEK PA. 1848” in four lines.

Wood stock is in nice condition with only minimal signs of age and use. There are no cracks. The flat opposite the lock has two nice inspector’s cartouches. Ramrod channel is very good. All three barrel bands are present and held by springs. Buttplate is dark with some heavy pitting at toe. Tang has real good “U.S.” Both sling swivels are present.

Flat faced trumpet head ramrod is complete with threaded tip. Iron surface is dark with some pitting around the head.  [ad]
