MODEL 1863 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET TYPE-1 DATED 1863

$3,295.00 SOLD

Item Code: 945-350

Barrel surface is in excellent condition. It shows signs of light cleaning but is otherwise very nice with no mottling or pitting. The front sight is present at the muzzle and the rear sight has both flip-up leaves. The left flat of the breech bears a crisp “VP” and eaglehead. The eagle on the bolster is also crisp. Nipple is original and has original finish. Bore has light surface dust and is otherwise clean. Rifling is fair.

The lockplate still shows good case colors and it is even stronger on the hammer. Lock has a crisp spread-winged eagle stamping and a very strong “US” over “SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer. There is an equally strong “1863” behind the hammer. Action is crisp and works properly. Lockplate screws and hammer screw are excellent.

The wood stock has been lightly gone over but is in overall excellent condition with almost no blemishes. The flat opposite the lock shows two good inspector’s cartouches. Wood lines are strong and there are no cracks.

The iron buttplate, triggerguard and nose cap match the other iron on the weapon. The buttplate has a crisp “US” stamped on the tang while each band retain their blue finish and have strong “U” stampings. The bands are held in place by screws and not band springs which is correct for the Type 1. Screw heads are excellent.  Both sling swivels are present.

The original straight shanked tulip head ramrod is present and complete with threaded tip. It surface matches the rest of the iron furniture on the rifle. Rod is tight in the channel.

Overall an excellent example.  [ad]
