SECOND MODEL ‘ALLIN CONVERSION’ TRAPDOOR RIFLE

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-358

This is a Model 1866 US breechloading rifle with the Allin Conversion, a.k.a. the Second Model Allin “Trapdoor.” In 1866, the Springfield Armory altered existing M1863 percussion muskets to a .50 caliber, centerfire rifle and employed the distinctive ‘trapdoor’ breechblock loading system. The 2nd Model differed from the First Model by using a longer bolt, a firing pin spring and a stronger internal extraction system that dispensed with the rack and pinion type. Some 25,000 M1863 muskets were altered by the armory in 1866.

Barrel surface is bright with only light scattered mottling. Correct sights are present. Bore has good rifling and is very clean. Barrel is anchored to the stock by 3 bright barrel bands with “U” stampings. For the most part the bands match the barrel in appearance. Band springs are also present.

Breechblock is mostly bright with some darker colors from oil quenching around the edges. Block is faintly stamped “1866” over an eagle’s head at the hinge. The number “1” is faint. Lockplate and hammer show some hint of case colors. Lock has good spreadwinged eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer and “1865” behind the hammer. Mechanics are good. Screw heads are also good.

The walnut stock is dark and looks to be untouched. There are no cracks and only the usual dings and dents from age and storage. The flat opposite the lock shows faint inspector’s cartouche. Left side of butt is stamped with the numbers “7821” and “47.” Both sling swivels are present. Buttplate has strong “US” stamping.

Steel rod has the ribbed and slotted head and threaded tip.  [ad]
