MODEL 1851 CADET MUSKET DATED 1851/52

$2,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-1678

An original Springfield Model 1851 smoothbore .57 caliber Cadet musket in nice condition. Weapon carries a lock date of 1851 while the barrel is dated 1852.

Barrel surface wears a pleasing dark patina over its entire surface. Small area at breech has been rubbed clean to reveal a strong "V / P" and eaglehead proof mark. Barrel date of "1852" stamped on the barrel tang and is slightly worn. Breech is free of any pitting and the original nipple is present. Brass blade front sight is mounted on the forward most barrel band. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Smoothbore is mostly dirty with some build-up in areas.

Lock surface and hammer are mostly dark and match the rest of the iron on the weapon. Lock has a very nice, near crisp, spreadwinged eagle over a small "US" forward of the hammer and an equally strong "SPRING / FIELD / 1851 " in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Mechanics are good and work properly.

Black walnut stock is in good original condition. Wood appears to be untouched and exhibits the usual dings and dents along with some minor old scratches. There is one slight closed crack that runs diagonally upward from the middle barrel band for approx. 2.50 inches. Between the first and second barrel bands the edge of the stock exhibits several old, small chips or gouges. Left side of stock opposite the lock has two faint inspector's cartouches. Wrist area just behind the barrel tang is stamped with the number “35.”

There is a crisp "US" stamped on the butt plate tang. Musket has a ramrod with a recessed trumpet head and threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present. Triggerguard and barrel bands match the rest of the metal. Screw heads are excellent.

A rare and hard to find weapon.   [ad]
