CONFEDERATE ALTERATION OF VIRGINIA MANUFACTORY MUSKET

$2,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-261

This weapon is a single shot, muzzle loading, .69 caliber smoothbore musket manufactured in Richmond Virginia. This is the “2nd Model” or Model 1812 musket. Originally produced as a flintlock it was converted to percussion.

The barrel exhibits some scattered oxidation, with light pitting around the breech, but otherwise the barrel remains nice with a dark brown patina. There is no rear sight. An off-center bayonet lug and added-on brass sight are located at the muzzle.  Musket has been converted to percussion by the addition of a bolster at the touch hole. The bolster was fitted expertly to the top edge of the lock plate. There are only remnants of proof and viewer stamps on the left side of breech.  The bore is dark and dirty.

The lock plate is dark in appearance with a beveled edge and moderate surface wear. Forward of the hammer is stamped “VIRGINIA”. Under that not much more than the “M” of “MANUFACTORY” is visible. Behind the hammer, “RICHMOND” is deeply stamped but only three digits of the date remain, “181_”. Percussion hammer has heavy cross-hatching on thumb spur.

The wood of the stock is in good condition overall. It does exhibit the usual small dings, dents and scratches from age and use. There is a very small hair line crack running from the front edge of the lock for about 1 inch. A set if initials are carved into each side of the stock near the butt.

All iron furniture shares the same dark patina as the barrel. The butt plate is unmarked.  All three bands are held by springs. Both sling swivels are missing. Button-head ramrod is present and complete with threaded tip. Trigger guard, swivel mount, all 3 barrel bands, and the side plate opposite the lock all have original matching part numbers (8).

Very nice Confederate conversion of a Virginia-made weapon.  [jet]
