HARPER’S FERRY MODEL 1816 CONVERSION DATED 1841

$1,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1030-107

This weapon is a single shot, muzzle loading, .69 caliber smoothbore musket manufactured at Harper’s Ferry.

The barrel surface is gray with very minor light scattered pinprick pitting in areas. There is no rear sight and the brass blade front sight is mounted on the rearmost of the front double barrel band. The bayonet lug is mounted above the muzzle. Musket has been converted by the “cone method” where the top of the barrel was drilled and a nipple screwed in place. Breech area has a very strong “VP” and eaglehead and a deep “1841” date. Original nipple is present and in good condition. Both lock screws and barrel tang screw are stamped with a number “1.” The bore is dark and moderately dirty.

The lockplate matches the barrel in appearance but with no pitting. It has a rounded and beveled front and a rear that is pointed and flush with the stock. There is a crisp eagle over a small “US” forward of the hammer and an equally strong “HARPER’S FERRY 1841” in three vertical lines behind the hammer. Action is excellent. Hammer screw is good.

The wood stock is in good condition and does not appear to have ever been cleaned. Original feathering is still visible in the wood. There is a closed crack running upward from the front of the lock to the stock edge for a distance of 3.00 inches. There is a “U” shaped raised crack behind the lock. The whole length is about 1.00 inch. The flat opposite the lock does not have any inspector’s cartouches. This area does have the initials “JAS” lightly stamped into the wood. The right side of the cheek bears the initials “JL.” The ramrod channel has one or two small nicks but nothing that detracts.

The buttplate tang has a good “US.” All three bands are held by springs and both sling swivels are present. Rear swivel is mounted on the triggerguard bow. Buttonhead ramrod is present and full length with threaded tip.

This weapon really has a good look to it and displays very well.   [ad]
