MODEL 1861 UNION ARMS CONTRACT RIFLE MUSKET DATED 1863

$1,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-166

Original Model 1861 .58 caliber rifle-musket in nice condition overall. Rifle was produced by the Union Arms Company of New York.

Barrel is bright with spotted scattered moderate mottling over its surface. Correct front and two-leaf rear sights are present. Left flat of the barrel at the breech does not display any inspector marks or barrel date. It is believed that these have been rubbed out by numerous cleanings. Bolster retains the original nipple. Bore has excellent rifling but is somewhat dirty and once scrubbed should clean up nicely.

The lockplate and hammer have a little heavier mottling but match the barrel well. There is a strongly stamped spread-winged eagle over “US” just forward of the hammer. Forward of this mark is “U.A. CO. over “NEW YORK.” Behind the hammer is a good date of “1863.” Bolster screw shows some light wear but hammer screw is very good. Lockplate screws show light wear. Action works properly.

Black walnut stock is in very nice condition and exhibits the usual dings and scratches consistent with age. There are two hairline cracks, one in front of the lock and one behind. These are very slight and are only about 0.50 an inch long. The flat opposite the lock does not have any inspector’s marks. Ramrod channel that shows little wear.

The musket’s original tulip-head steel ramrod with swell retains its threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present and all three barrel bands are stamped with a “U.” Iron buttplate has strong “US” stamped on tang.  [ad]
