FLINTLOCK HANAU-JAEGER RIFLE

$13,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 401-34

This Jaeger rifle has a .65 caliber, 29" long octagonal barrel. The bore is dark with light overall pitting shows very strong rifling. The barrel is an overall dark pewter gray with scattered very light oxidation staining. There is a simple brass blade sight mortised at the muzzle and a two-leaf rear sight.

The flat stepped lock is marked “I. C. Stohr/ A. Hanau” and features a faceted iron pan, gooseneck cock and unbridled frizzen. The attendant metal surfaces are the same nice dull pewter patina as the barrel, showing only sparsely scattered light oxidation staining, the face of the frizzen with light marks from striking. Springs remain strong; hammer holds at half-cock but not at full-cock.

The rifle features faceted, brass ramrod thimbles and tailpipe. The Jaeger-style trigger guard shows chiseled front and rear extensions and has a large rearward curving "grip". There is a heavy faceted buttplate and the sideplate is the semi-serpentine style seen on Hesse-Hanau and Hesse-Cassell Jaeger rifles of the period with a small teat at its rear. An unadorned, oval escutcheon is mounted on topside of wrist area. The brass nose cap is a replacement. “No 22” is engraved on the top of the buttplate tang. All the brass is semi-bright.

The European walnut stock rates very good for its age with nice edges and the overall minor dings and handling marks one would expect from a field-used arm. There is raised island carving around the lock and left stock flat as well as the breech plug tang with a nice carved flourish ahead of the left-side cheekpiece. Additional carving is evident along the ramrod channel and around the tailpipe. The rifle features a sliding wood patchbox. The brass-tipped, iron ramrod is a replacement. The original sling swivels remain.

A very attractive Jaeger rifle perfect for anyone interested in early military firearms.  [jet]
