This Model 1863, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket, dated 1865, is complete and in good condition. Produced at the Remington arms firm of Ilion, New York. The 40” long barrel is clean and bright with areas of light pitting near the breech. Other parts (lockplate, hammer, butt plate, bands, trigger guard, swivels, nose cap and ramrod) are in place.  Lock plate is stamped “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” in front of the hammer and strongly stamped “1865” behind hammer. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster with “U.S.” under.

Steel butt plate stamped with large “U S”. Has the original, blued two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Barrel date stamp is worn off at the breech. Barrel bore is clean with very minor pitting and has very good rifling. All screw heads are in good condition. Bolster flat also features a spread-winged eagle. Government proof marks “V / P / [eagle head]” on left facet of the breech are clear. Small sub-inspector stamps can be found on most parts. Mechanics are strong and crisp.

Black walnut stock is in good condition overall. Stock exhibits two faint government cartouches. Moderate number of blemishes in the wood show use. Retains its tulip-head steel ramrod with threaded tip excellent condition.
