HARPER’S FERRY MODEL 1816 CONVERSION DATED 1842

$795.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3868

Single shot .69 smoothbore musket made by Harper’s Ferry and dated 1842.

The metal surfaces look to have been lightly cleaned some time ago. The barrel surface has light surface pitting and mottling throughout while the breech area has light surface rust. Pitting is heaviest at the breech. Since this is a smoothbore there is no rear sight. The brass blade front sight is present on top of the rear most front double barrel band. The bayonet lug is present above the muzzle. The only markings on the breech is a worn “1842” on the barrel tang. Originally a flintlock this weapon has been converted to percussion by the cone conversion method. The original nipple remains. Bore is mostly clean with some spots of built up dirt or pitting near the bottom.

The lockplate has a rounded beveled front that leads to a point at rear. Point is flush with the wood of the stock. Lock and hammer surface have moderate to heavy pitting and surface dirt. Forward of the hammer the lock bears a faint spread-winged eagle over “US” while behind the hammer there is a strong marking of “HARPERS FERRY 1842” in three lines.

Stock is in fair condition. The wood between the top of the lock and the breech tang has been cracked and repaired. One small square-head nail is visible as well as several small tacks. This repair has slightly affected the fit of the breech tang in the stock recess. There is also an old section of wood that looks to have been notched out of the stock above the retaining spring on the lower barrel band. There are also the usual small scattered dings and dents. No cartouche marks are visible.

The iron buttplate has a “U.S.” that is partially obscured by pitting. There has also been some shrinkage in the wood where it meets the butt plate. Both sling swivels are present as is the button tipped ramrod.

This is a well-used Harpers Ferry smoothbore with a decent bore.  [ad]
