DUTCH-NORWEGIAN 1774 INFANTRY MUSKET WITH A 1740 PRUSSIAN LOCKPLATE

Item Code: G3926

This antique, 18th century military flintlock is a long barrel Revolutionary War composite musket with inherent characteristics of Dutch and Prussian manufacture. The .79 or .80 caliber bore musket has longarm with a total length of 56” and a 41” long, round, smoothbore barrel pinned to the walnut stock.

Lockplate measures 6 5/8” long and exhibits the ‘banana-shape’ or convex contour. Hammer or cock is flat sided while the frizzen is flat-faced. No exterior bridle to support the steel pivot screw. Steel main spring finial has a rounded point while its retaining screw is threaded from the inside of the lockplate. Lockplate has the single, steel spring screw in back of hammer. Plate face bears the maker’s mark “POTZDAM MA_” on the flat in front of the cock. Brass triggerguard and the large bow measure 12” long with no sling swivel. Iron trigger has a slight backward curl at the tip. Unmarked barrel breech area exhibits an open touch-hole while 8” down from breech is a small open rear sight device. Entire barrel is heavily rust pocked and has a small iron front side for an angular bayonet attached to the bottom of the muzzle.

Musket has a massive shoulder or butt stock with a high 7” comb that ends in a crude, 1” diameter, circular bit of tooling. Stock has a brass butt plate with a 4¾” long tang. Upper stock area of the stock shows major period repairs crudely fashioned. Both sides of stock at tang are missing wood slivers. Entire lockplate rests in a crudely cutout recess in the stock. Cock, battery (frizzen), battery springs, pan, and screws are original, as are the jaw and jaw screw. Flint under the jaw. Cock is loose on the lockplate. Mechanics need some adjustment. Bore is dark with moderate pitting. The dark stock appears to have been cleaned a while ago and shows normal dings, dents, and gouges. Also bears a 5¾” long rounded, convex, brass sideplate. A 41” long, tapered hardwood ramrod sits in the r/r channel.  [ra]
