MODEL 1842 SPRINGFIELD SMOOTHBORE MUSKET DATED 1848

$1,595.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3920

An original Springfield Model 1842 single shot, smoothbore, .69 caliber musket in good condition. All metal surfaces have a nice dark patina.

Barrel surface is dark and smooth with moderate pitting at the breech. Proofmarks of “V / P” and eaglehead are strong. Barrel date is worn, but with a loop the date of “1848” can be seen. Musket also retains its brass blade front sight mounted on the forward most front barrel band. There is no rear sight. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Bore has light to moderate dirt with some pitting.

The lock surface matches the rest of the iron furniture on the weapon. The markings include a very worn spreadwinged eagle stamped over a good, small, “US” forward of the hammer and a strong “SPRING / FIELD / 1848” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple is original. Mechanics are strong and work properly.

Black walnut stock is in very good untouched condition. Wood is dark but does exhibit several small dings and dents. The flat opposite the lock has two faint inspector’s cartouches. The wood lines on this musket are still sharp in their contours and very pleasing to the eye.

There is a crisp “US” stamped on the buttplate tang. Musket retains its original trumpet head steel ramrod with flat face and threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present. Triggerguard and barrel bands match the rest of the iron.

Screw heads on the weapon show very little wear.  [AD]
