CONFEDERATE “CLEANED & REPAIRED” PATTERN 1853 ENFIELD RIFLE

$3,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3935

This P53 Enfield rifle is an actual specimen featured in the newly published book, “Captured & Collected -- Confederate Reissued Firearms”. It is a .577 caliber muzzleloader measuring 55” long overall with a 39” long barrel. Clearly stamped with a “Z”.

Barrel surface has scattered light pitting with overall dark brown surface. Bore is clean and clear with strong rifling. Viewer and proof stamps on the left side of breech along with the “25” bore size. Combination bayonet lug/blade sight mounted at the muzzle along with the flip-up, long-range rear sight.

Lockplate bears the clear stamping of “TOWER / 1862” in front of hammer. English crown stamped behind the hammer. Thin, two-line tooling along the edges. Hammer also has lined tooling around edge and textured pad on top spur. Mechanics are tight and strong.

Brass trigger guard, washers, butt plate and nose cap. Sling swivels are mounted on the trigger guard and front barrel band. Other components include the three iron barrel bands and an iron Enfield pattern ramrod with slotted front end and threaded rear end.

Walnut stock is in nice shape but does show a few minor dings as is typical from age and use. A “Z” inspection stamp is found on the underside of the stock in front of the trigger guard.  This mark signifies that this weapon was recovered and turned in to the Confederate Ordnance Bureau for at least cleaning, and/or for some type of repair. The “Z” is believed to stand for Louis Zimmer who oversaw repair work at Richmond. This exact gun is detailed on pages 70-71 of Steve Knott’s new “Captured & Collected” book.

A nice P53 Enfield rifle with a known Confederate mark.  [jet]
