VERY NICE MODEL 1816 MUSKET ALTERED TO PERCUSSION WITH MAYNARD PRIMING SYSTEM

$1,950.00 SOLD

Item Code: 172-5519

This Model 1816 Springfield .69 caliber smoothbore was altered from flintlock to percussion. This was accomplished by cutting off the old breech and adding a new breech with integral bolster and percussion nipple. In addition, a Remington lockplate using the Maynard tape priming system was installed.

The musket has a 42” round barrel secured with three barrel-bands that in turn are held in place with iron band springs. Bore is dark with scattered light oxidation; needs a clean, oiled patch run through. Barrel has no rear sight as normal and a small, blade-shaped, brass front sight mounted on the upper barrel band. Small bayonet lug mounted on top of barrel at muzzle. Left barrel facet exhibits very clear proof mark of “P” within a recessed oval. No other marks remain due to the breech exchange. Barrel breech tang is stamped with “1857” date. Barrel surface is smooth with scattered dark mottling; most near bolster. A small “40” is stamped on top of barrel between breech and lower band.

The Maynard-style of lockplate is marked “REMINGTON / ILION.N.Y. / 1856 / U.S.” behind the rounded, high spur hammer. There are no additional marks on lockplate. Kidney-shaped primer door has small “door knob” in the middle. Mechanically strong and crisp.

Original “button head” ramrod remains in excellent condition. Has both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one in front of the trigger guard bow. Butt plate is marked with a deep “US” on the tang. All gun metal is in good condition with many parts bearing small letter inspection stamps.

Black walnut stock has original color and finish. A few very minor scuffs and dings to the wood from age and use. Visible on the underside of the butt stock just behind the trigger guard backstrap are stamped initials, possibly the stock maker, and an oval inspection cartouche.  The edges of the raised “flats” on either side of the breech remain strong. Two oval cartouches are clearly seen on the left flat opposite the lock.  This stock is in exceptionally good condition.

A great conversion musket with Maynard tape primer lockplate!  [jet]
