Item Code: 2020-67

This classic original British longarm is an 1862 dated Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle manufactured by Tower, a private Birmingham, England arms facility. Single shot, muzzle loading rifle musket is full length and measures 39 1/8” long barrel. Barrel untouched patina, with very minor scattered surface pitting between the upper and middle barrel bands. Breech marking’s visible, provisional proof marks, a gauge mark “25” for .577 Caliber. Bore has strong rifling, semi-bright. Small sub stamp letter “T” on breech. Standard long-range rear, folding leaf sight and the small blade front sight. The lock plate surface smooth with semi-gray patina with minor age spots. Lock markings bear the standard Victoria monogram of a “crown” back of hammer but without the “V.R.” indicating a likely British export. Sharp block letters “Tower/1862” on front of lock and matching condition hammer. Mechanics are perfect.

All barrel bands are original, both sling swivels present. Bands have a nice dark patina; butt plate, nose cap, trigger guard and lockplate screws are all brass, original and have a nice dark untouched patina. The ramrod is full length, pulls hard from the channel.

Walnut stock lightly cleaned in excellent condition. A clearly stamped letter “2” inspection stamp is found on the trigger guard. This mark signifies that this weapon was inspected by the Confederate Ordnance Bureau for at least cleaning and/or perhaps for some type of repair. Some of these “repairs” are visible on muskets and some are not. The letter “Z” is for Louis Zimmer of the Richmond Arsenal. A copy of Steve Knott’s book “Captured and Collected Confederate Reissued Firearms” comes with this firearm.  [ws]
