CONFEDERATE CAPTURED AND COLLECTED MODEL 1842 SPRINGFIELD MUSKET

$3,750.00 SOLD

Item Code: 2020-487

This is the exact weapon illustrated on the cover of Steve Knott’s latest book, "Captured and Collected Confederate Reissued Firearms”, and discussed on pp. 64-65.  This is a nice example of the guns that were captured or collected by CS Ordnance teams or civilians and paced into the Confederate cleaning and repair (C&R) system for reissue to Confederate troops. Some 200,000 firearms, along with perhaps another 50,000 turned in by CS units, mostly in the eastern theatre, are estimated to have gone through the process at Danville, Staunton, Lynchburg and Richmond. This musket bears a CS final inspector’s stamp, “T”, just forward of the triggerguard tang. The identity of the inspector is unknown.

This musket exhibits several interesting C&R attributes. The stock is in VF condition without any US inspector’s cartouche visible and has poorly executed mortising around the trigger guard and side plate. It also is converted a Rifled-Musket with a poorly executed attempt at Rifling. The lockplate is marked, “Spring/field/1853” behind the hammer and with an eagle over “US” forward of the hammer. The barrel is proofed with the original VP/Eagle of Springfield Armory and a partial date 185_. All metal is smooth and bright. There is no doubt the weapon was cleaned by the C&R process. Mechanically perfect and a great example!  [ss]
