Longarm is a M1816 smoothbore musket made by H. Osborne of Springfield, Massachusetts. This company manufactured an unknown number of these weapons.

Musket is a .69 caliber and retains all its original parts in good condition. The iron lock is round in the front and slightly pointed at the tail. Lockplate is crisply marked with two eagle heads over “SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer with another eagle head behind the hammer. Frizzen has proper bend at top and the pan is brass which is also correct. Hammer has a replaced flint. Action works well. All metal parts of the lock have a matching dark patina with some minor scuffing behind the hammer.

Musket has a 42” long round barrel secured to the walnut stock by three iron bands finished brown. Barrel surface is brown with heavy pitting around the touch hole. No barrel date or proof marks are visible. Brass blade front sight is mounted on the rear most arc of the forward double band and the bayonet lug is present at top of the muzzle. Bore is dark and dirty with light pitting.

A large trigger guard secures the lower sling swivel which is made up of an iron ring that passes through a hole in the guard that is missing the usual ball shaped device. The middle band supports a second iron ring passing through a hole in the band. Original button-head ramrod is present with threaded end.

Walnut stock is medium to dark brown and looks to be uncleaned. It is correct with a low comb. There are no cartouches visible. Overall the stock has some minor dings and chips consistent with age but nothing major. Buttplate lacks the “US” stamping.  [AD]
