This Civil War longarm is a .58 caliber Springfield Model 1863, Type 1, single-shot muzzleloader. The Springfield M1863 Type 1 musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts. Over two hundred seventy thousand such weapons were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department during the war years.

The 40” round barrel shows very light pin-point pitting especially at breech and bolster. Top of breech stamped “1863”. Left side has “VP” and standard eagle head. Flat side of bolster has small eagle stamp. Bore is bright and clean with strong rifling; excellent! Has blade sight/bayonet lug at muzzle and two-leaf, flip up sight at breech.

Lock and hammer are a very dark gray with smooth surfaces.  Lock marked clearly with the “Eagle / U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” in front of the hammer and “1863” behind hammer. The distinctive “S” shaped hammer has beveled edges. Mechanics are crisp and strong.

This type musket was produced without barrel band springs. The three screw-tightened barrel bands are correct and in place; all stamped with “U”. Retains its original steel, straight-shank ramrod. Butt plate boldly stamped “US”.

Black walnut stock is very good with original deep, rich patina. Has a few of the usual small dings with some chipping along the edges of the ramrod channel. Two very faint cartouches remain.
