FINE U.S. NAVY WINCHESTER-LEE MODEL 1895 BOLT ACTION RIFLE-MUSKET, WITH FORT MIFFLIN TAG

$3,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-2485

Serial# 19222, 6mm Lee Navy, 28” barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this rifle retain about 85% original blue with most of the loss due to the exposed areas of the barrel toning to a deep brown patina and showing a few scattered patches of old light pitting along with an area of light oxidation staining along the receiver ring, light freckling and handling marks.

The barrel bands and buttplate have mostly flaked to gray-brown patina while the front sight hood retains generous amounts of original bright blue and the small parts of the action likewise retain most of their bright blue. All markings remain crisp and clear, the receiver ring with proper U.S.N. marking, naval anchor, serial number and “J.N.J.” inspector. The smooth pistol grip walnut stock and hand guard remain in very fine condition retaining most of their arsenal oil finish showing some scattered light dings, a few shallow tiny chips along some edges and mild handling marks, a bit more noticeable along the toe line. The stock shows a small star inspector stamp at the heel and the rear sling swivel is somewhat loose in its mount. The action seems to function well mechanically.

The rifle includes an interesting brass naval inventory disc that is stamped on the front “U.S.N. / (anchor) / FORT MIFFLIN” with inventory number “111” on the back. Fort Mifflin was commissioned on the banks of the Delaware River outside of Philadelphia in 1771 and was decommissioned in 1954 and continues to serve as a museum and the only intact for complex in Philadelphia.

A very attractive Lee Navy not often seen in such nice condition. [Vincent Coniglio Collection]
