Longarm is a Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 rifle made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. This single trigger, straight-breech, single shot breechloader is a .52 caliber percussion rifle made in 1865. Total production numbers for this model Sharps is 7,000 rifles that fall into the serial range of #C 30,000 to C 40,000. Rifle’s serial # C, 38537 is located at the top of the receiver tang. Rifle measures 47” overall and features a 30” long round barrel without a bayonet lug mated to a two-piece black walnut stock. Barrel is stamped “NEW MODEL 1863” in front of the hammer and “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO. / HARTFORD CONN.” in front of the long range, folding rear sight. Sight stamped with the Lawrence patent date. Barrel is inspector-marked on the left facet with “M.N.M.” Bore is strong and bright with six-groove rifling.

Shoulder stock has a single government cartouche on the left wrist area, no sling ring or bar, and features an iron patchbox on the right side. Full forend stock is secured to the barrel with three-barrel bands. Entire walnut stock not refinished and shows numerous dents and dings to the wood from normal use and age. One very small partial sliver chip missing on forend bottom in front of upper band. Forend does show light inspector marks “E.P.R.”. All gunmetal exhibits normal wear and dark areas of oxidation. Barrel has a dark blue-plum patina. No case colors visible on receiver. Sub-inspector marks appear on all major components, i.e. receiver, lockplate, patchbox door, buttplate, hammer, and all barrel bands. Mechanics are very strong and crisp. All lockplate patent markings sharp. Frame screws slightly buggered. Rifle has a modern black leather shoulder sling attached to the swivels.

A fine condition, original, New Model Sharps military rifle to fit into any display or weapons collection.
