SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1863 RIFLE MUSKET, TYPE II

$1,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 218-406

The last issue of the U.S. Government .58 caliber muzzle loading rifle muskets. This particular model exhibits the three barrel band retainer springs and is classified as the Type II. Many of these late war production weapons (1863-1865) were converted at the Springfield Armory to the Allin breech loading conversion of a .50-70 caliber shell.

This example shows signs of originally being field issued. At sometime in its history, the barrel, barrel bands, trigger guard, ramrod and butt plate shows signs of being cleaned. The lock plate and hammer still retains a deep chocolate brown patina, as well as the leaf sight. Pitting present on the full length of the barrel, most heavily concentrated near the breech and bolster.

The year of manufacture (1863) is stamped on both the lock plate and on the breech tang (less visible on the breech tang). Lock action is strong and crisp and percussion nipple is near mint condition. Rifle bore is strong with a few small, scattered areas of light pitting.

The overall stock has a pleasing dark patina with scattered nicks and scratches. There are some small amounts of wood loss located on the upper ramrod channel and a nick just above the barrel band on the left side.  There is also a fragment missing above the upper lock screw. Another feature is the number '140' stamped vertically into the face of stock opposite the lock plate on the flat surface between the lock screws (meaning unknown).

A nice example of a used but not abused, Civil War rifled musket.
