This example of the Model 1863 .58 caliber- rifle musket exhibits the first pattern version that superceded the previous model of 1861. With this newly adopted pattern came the redesigned alterations and deletion of the previous use of the barrel band springs and the adoption of the rounded profile and screw tension barrel bands, straight ramrod, newly designed hammer and the elimination of the clean-out screw at the bolster.
The specimen available here has at one time in its history seen extensive usage and has undergone stock cleaning (sanding & refinishing) and part replacements. All metallic elements show medium to heavy pitting on the full length of the 40” barrel, barrel bands, trigger guard and butt plate. No date, proof or inspectors marks are visible at the breech area of the barrel due to heavy pitting. The eagle stamping on the face of the bolster has been obliterated due to heavy pitting. Lock plate face still retains the visible date 1863 as well as the federal eagle, plus the US Springfield markings. Lock action is still very tight and crisp in all positions. Replacement (original hardware) upper barrel band looks to be a cleaned relic put back into service, as it shows very heavy and deep pitting. Rifle bore is present and shows areas of medium pitting.
This rifle-musket is recommended as a display item.
