MODEL 1861 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE-MUSKET

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 362-449

This Springfield Armory example is dated on the lockplate the first year of manufacture, “1861”. Very few early specimens of this type rifle have survived to date due to their heavy usage during the Civil War period. There is no doubt that this particular rifle-musket has seen very heavy field use. Unfortunately, there is no known provenance or unit history available with this weapon. In its present state, it would be considered “FAIR”.

CONDITION: All metallic parts - barrel, lockplate & hammer, butt plate, trigger guard, ramrod and barrel bands - all exhibit heavy pitting and all mentioned parts have been cleaned at some point in the gun’s history. Stock also shows signs of heavy refinishing, along with some wood loss, dents and scratches located on the lock side. There is a 5 ½” wood fragment missing from the upper edge channel of the stock  located  just below the first barrel band. No visible signs of inspector cartouches or proof marks on the barrel breech. Barrel length has been shortened from the regulation 40” to 39 ½”. Lock action is still crisp.

Suggested as a display item only.

DISCLAIMER: All firearms are sold as collector's items only - we do not accept responsibility as to the shooting safety or reliability of any antique firearm. All firearms are described as accurately as possible, given the restraints of a catalog listing length. We want satisfied customers & often "under" describe the weapons. Any city or state regulations regarding owning antique firearms are the responsibility of the purchaser. All firearms are "mechanically perfect" unless noted, but again, are NOT warranted as safe to fire.
