James T. Long was born in Lancaster County on February 25, 1842. On July 31, 1861 Long enlisted as a Corporal in Company B, 99th Pennsylvania Infantry. In November of 1861 he was injured by a falling tree and also contracted typhoid fever causing his discharge in April of 1862. During his time of service the regiment served in the defenses of Washington.

Long next enlisted as a Sergeant in Company G, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry on July 15, 1863.  Eventually the regiment had its horses taken away and they served as infantry with the Army of the Potomac’s 5th Corps. The regiment was engaged in numerous actions from Cold Harbor through the first part of the Petersburg Campaign. Finally, in October 1864 the regiment was remounted. Not long afterward, on November 10, 1864, Sergeant Long was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Company A. He eventually attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant but was never mustered as such. The regiment continued to serve with the Army of the Potomac through to Appomattox. In total the regiment suffered 332 casualties during its service. 1st Lieutenant Long was discharged July 8, 1865.

After the war Long lived in different places eventually ending up in Gettysburg in 1884. He was active in the GAR and served as a battlefield guide for years and became well known. In 1901 he published ““GETTYSBUR: HOW THE BATTLE WAS FOUGHT” which was well received. He died on August 20, 1911 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg.
