Nineteenth century shadowbox with half of a woven basket attached to a cardboard backing and filled with various amounts of dried flora collected on the Gettysburg battlefield. The flora is tastefully arranged and is beautiful and graceful in its presentation. These items were put together by children from the Soldier’s Orphanage here at Gettysburg and sold to raise money for that institution.

There is a hand written dedication in period ink around the basket that reads “FROM THE BATTLEFIELD OF GETTYSBURG JULY 1ST, 2ND, + 3RD 1863. TO COL. CHAS. BARNES 6TH PA. H. ARTY. AND LADY WITH COMPLIMENTS MRS. DR. WM. TAYLOR.”

The basket itself meas. approx. 1.50 inches across the bottom and 3.50 inches across the top. The frame is wood painted gold and meas. approx. 13.75 inches long x 11.50 inches wide x 2.75 inches thick. There is a gold braided rope attached to the frame with a hook for mounting on the wall. Near the hook is a very worn rosette with a gold fringed tassel.

Colonel Charles Barnes was born July 10, 1820 in Burton, Ohio. At the beginning of the Civil War he was a 40 year old boatman living in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. On May 1, 1861 he was commissioned Captain of Company E, 38th Pennsylvania Infantry. While with the 38th Barnes fought at Dranesville and on the Peninsula at Mechanicsville, Gaines Mill and Glendale. He also saw action at 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg and Mine Run. Barnes was mustered out as Major on May 12, 1864 having been promoted on April 1, 1863.

Barnes next served as Captain of Battery F, 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. He was promoted to Colonel on September 13, 1864 and Brigadier General by Brevet on September 28, 1865. During his service the regiment was part of the defenses of Washington.

Sometime after the war Barnes moved to Northport, Michigan where he died on July 15, 1896.
