US ARTILLERY GREASE BUCKET FROM SPANGLER FARM AT GETTYSBURG

$2,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 173-597

This iron artillery tar/grease bucket is from the well-known collection of the late John Geiselman. The bucket was recovered on the George Spangler farm which sits between the Baltimore Pike and the Taneytown Road. It was in the summer kitchen of this farm that Confederate General Lew Armistead died after being wounded during Pickett’s Charge. Some artillery was in position on the section of the farm that borders Granite School House Road and the Taneytown Road. It should also be noted that Granite School House Road was a connecting road between the Baltimore Pike and the Taneytown Road and was used by large amounts of Union Infantry and artillery moving into position on Cemetery Ridge.

The bucket stands approx. 7.00 inches tall and is approx. 8.00 inches wide. The body retains a lot of the original paint though there is also much scattered rust. Despite the rust there are no holes. Attached to the top is a thin iron domed cover that slides from side to side. Attached to two ears at either side of the top is a 12.00 inch chain with an “O” ring at center.

With the piece comes a modern printed label relating the information above concerning the location of recovery.
