CONFEDERATE 3 INCH READ “VIRGINIA PATTERN” READ SHELL FROM GETTYSBURG

$995.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M23426

The body of this shell is in good cleaned condition. The body surface has an even mixture of smooth surfaces and light pitting. Both the upper and lower bourrelets are visible. The sabot is a copper ring and the center of the base of the shell has a nice lathe dimple. The sabot shows light signs of rifling from having been fired and one edge of the sabot is slightly bent.

This shell was recovered on the old Fantasyland property along the Taneytown Road across from Meade’s headquarters. Shells recovered from this area are considered to be over-shots from the July 3rd bombardment just prior to Pickett’s Charge.

This type shell was meant for use in the 3-inch ordnance rifle.
