This is a piece of the narrow base section of a 3-inch Schenkl case shot shell. The fragment is the solid knob found in this base area exhibiting the bottom of the bursting chamber with a case shot ball still embedded in it. A piece of the side of the shell sticks up like a finger. The fragment meas. approx. 3.00 at its longest x 1.25 at its widest. The rust has been stabilized and coated with a clear lacquer to preserve the piece.
This item was recovered on the Rose Farm by the late John Cullison and passed by him to the Rosensteel family where it resided in their collection until recently deaccessioned.
