Excavated example of a Union enlisted man’s cuff size button in 14mm. These size versions were used on garments such as, Frock coat sleeves, Shell jackets, Vests, and side buttons on fatigue hats and Kepis. This specimen shows some gold gilt still remaining on its face side surface. The original shank is present, but slightly bent. There is a manufacturer’s mark located on the reverse side: SCOVILLS & Co EXTRA. This button was recovered on Culp’s Hill by the late John Cullison and passed by him to the Rosensteel family collection.
