These brass hooks were located on each of the straps that extended from the shoulder straps on double bag knapsacks. These secondary straps were usually crossed over the soldier’s chest and hooked to opposite shoulder strap. Many of these are found on Civil War battlefields and campsites. The brass surfaces have discolored with age but the hook is solid and complete.
This item was once part of the well-known Rosensteel family collection of Gettysburg artifacts.
