This check was drawn on the Gettysburg National Bank and is so marked on the face. It was written by David Kendlehart to Dr. J. W. C. O’Neal who signed the check on the back. The check is dated “GETTYSBURG, PA. APRIL 6th, 1874.”

The check is in excellent condition with green printing on the front and bold ink on both the front and back.

David Kendleheart was born December 30, 1813. At the time of the battle of Gettysburg Mr. Kendleheart was living on Baltimore Street and was by trade a shoemaker. Also at the time of the battle he was Borough Council President and met with Confederate General Early when his forces entered Gettysburg on June 26th 1863. It was to him that General Early gave his ransom demands for the town. He died April 30, 1891 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg.

John William Crapster O’Neal was originally from Fairfax, Virginia. He attended Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg and received a medical degree from the Maryland Medical School. O’Neal practiced medicine in Baltimore and Hanover before moving to Gettysburg in early 1863. Soon after the battle Dr. O’Neal began noting the burial places of Confederates on the field. He assisted Samuel Weaver in his work of moving Union dead to the National Cemetery and in the location and movement to the South of many of the Confederate dead. Through the efforts of Dr. O’Neal and Samuel Weaver the identity of many of the Confederate dead were preserved. Dr. O’Neal died in Gettysburg on April 24, 1913 and is buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hanover, Pennsylvania.
