CUT DOWN RELIC M1860 CAVALRY SABER RECOVERED ON 1ST DAY’S FIELD AT GETTYSBURG

$395.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 173-1406

This is the blade section only of a Model 1860 cavalry saber. The blade has been shortened to 20.25 inches from the tip to the bottom of the ricasso. No doubt this blade was somehow broken and then reground and used by the Confederates. The tip is original and the way it was after regrinding. The wide fuller runs the length of the blade. One side of the ricasso is marked “HORSTMANN /PHILADELPHIA” with a rack number of “17.” There is no hilt only the tang.

The surface of the metal has darkened with age and exhibits some light pitting and light surface rust. Oddly enough the blade edge is free of nicks.

This item was recovered on the 1st Day’s field at Gettysburg by the late John Cullison and was passed by him to the Rosensteel family who added it to their well-known collection of Gettysburg artifacts.
