This framed cabinet photograph shows a group of 15 men posed around the monument to General John Buford along the Chambersburg Pike on the 1st Days battlefield just west of Gettysburg. Two men are seated on either side of a cannon barrel at the base of the monument. This barrel fired the first shot of the battle of Gettysburg. The other 13 men are posed in a clump covering the other cannon barrels that surround the monument. Clearly visible in the background is the equestrian statue of Major General John F. Reynolds who fell not too far from his monument. Also visible in the background is one of the many artillery pieces that mark the battlefield.

All the men in the group are marked by hand printed numbers in ink. Written in pencil on the gray mount and barely visible along the bottom edge of the photo is the key giving the names of all pictured. Also somewhat subdued in the lower right corner is the Tipton imprint.

The image meas. approx. 8.75 x 7.25 and framed it meas. approx. 13.50 x 11.75. The wood frame has a nice beaded border and looks to be the original. The image itself is clear but the contrast is light.
