This Civil War Federal artillery round is an original 3” Combination-Percussion and Time fused Schenkl case-shot shell in excellent condition. Round was recovered from an undisclosed location at the Gettysburg battlefield sometime in the 1960s.
During the Civil War the three-inch diameter heavy artillery projectile was the type used heavily by Union Artillery in their 3” Ordnance Rifles and later in the ten pound Parrott guns. This shell specimen retains its original, zinc combination time-fuse adapter, but is missing its paper-mache sleeve (sabot). Fuse adapter, which is screwed into the shell nose retains its graduated zinc adapter time index and its rotator. No stampings are visible on either component.
This handsome and almost complete projectile measures 10” long including the fuzing. The case-shot shell has a diameter of 2.94” and weighs 9 pounds. Artifact has seven raised vertical ribs on its tapered, conical tail. Nose is much more rounded to accommodate a large load of case-shot lead balls. Entire body exhibits a rusted surface that is smooth, hard but the fuse adapter has been distorted somewhat by impact. Body has a single ¼” hole drilled to for diffuse the round. Entire iron shell exhibits a pleasing dark brown-plum patina. A very excellent U.S. 3” Schenkl case-shot shell from Gettysburg.
