Item Code: G3276

This cap and ball percussion sidearm is a complete Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in fine condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Colt Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.

Revolver is a government-inspected, .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and the 8” long barrel. Bore is still strong but does show light pitting and oxidation. Should clean to bright. Grips are original one-piece walnut in excellent condition with two clear government inspector’s cartouches. Grips also have been field-altered to secure a lanyard by having two small cutouts carved into the butt portion of the grips adjacent to the butt strap. This action was common with many Virginia cavalrymen during the war.

All gunmetal has been lightly cleaned and exhibits a pleasing dusky gray finish with scattered spots of dark oxidation overall. No original case colors or bluing remain on the sidearm. Revolver has matching serial numbers #113653 on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder, wedge, and spline. Serial # dates the manufacture in the 2rd or 3rd quarter of 1863. Revolver is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and a small notch in the backstop indicating a martial arm. Mechanics are crisp.

Barrel address, though a bit worn, is still clear and sharp and reads “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA”. Cylinder scene in very good plus condition as is the “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame. All nipples original and fine. Three safeties still protrude while the remaining three are hammered down flat. Barrel, cylinder, triggerguard components all show sub-inspector stampings. Original frame screws are in very good condition with only one buggered. A classic, wartime production, three-screw Colt Model 1860 Army revolver, it is a fine martial sidearm of the Civil War from the famous Lee’s Headquarters’ Museum in Gettysburg.
