CDV image shows Lieutenant Milnor Brown of Company I, 124th New York. He is posed with his right hand grasping his sword belt and his left hand resting on the hilt of his sword. He wears a dark single breasted frock coat with 2nd Lieutenant of Staff shoulder straps and matching dark trousers. On his head he wears a kepi with a “US” in a wreath on the front. At his waist is his sword belt with rectangular plate and a Model 1850 Field and Staff officer’s sword.

The image is clear and clean and in good condition overall. Contrast is excellent.

Reverse has photographer’s imprint for WHITNEY’S…BROADWAY… NEW YORK along with some modern collector information in pencil.

Milnor Brown was born November 2, 1839. His first service was as a Private in the 7th New York in which he enlisted in April of 1862. His service with the 7th consisted of guard duty in Baltimore. At some point after his return he was assigned to the Staff of General Harvey Brown, commander of New York’s Militia.

Lieutenant Brown joined the 124th New York in the field sometime in late June and was assigned to command Company I. His reception was cold as most of the men in the Company saw him as an interloper and would have preferred one of their Sergeants being promoted to command the Company. After a few days on the march the men saw Lieutenant Brown’s devotion to his duty and his responsibilities and accepted him into the Company.

On July 2nd at Gettysburg Lt. Brown was killed in action on Houck’s Ridge. His body was returned to New York City where it was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn.

With the item comes a nice copy of a similar image showing the period ID on the reverse.
