This is a totally stripped down lock plate from Model 1861 Springfield rifle musket. The lock has darkened with age and has light surface rust but under a loop “US” and “SPRINGFIELD” can clearly be seen. Also along the left edge is the date “1862.”
This item comes to us from the Ziegler collection and is a Gettysburg relic.
