This is the top portion of a Confederate 12-pound case shot shell. It meas. approx. 5.00 x 4.00 inches. At center is the copper paper time fuse adapter while one side has half of the threaded hole for the side-loader plug. A look at the underside of the fragment shows the base of the fuse adapter with a small aperture for the fuse flame to reach the bursting charge.
Fragment is in good condition and has been lightly cleaned and coated to preserve it. This cleaning has been well done.
This fragment was recovered in the Union lines near the famous “High Water Mark” by the late Gettysburg resident John Cullison and passed by him to the Rosensteel Family collection where it remained until released by them.
